Materials
- 12 x 16 x 1.5 in Wood Panel
- 32 oz Titanium White Heavy Texture
- 2 oz Hansa Yellow (Acrylic Color)
- 2 oz Kermit Green (Acrylic Color)
- 2 oz Quinacridone Magenta (Acrylic Color)
- 2 oz Ultramarine Blue (Acrylic Color)
- 1 oz White Base Coat
- 2022 Spade Palette Knife
- 1 in Panel Brush
- 3x 16 inch piping bags
- 353 leaf tip
- 402 ruffle tip
- 846 closed star tip
- Disposable Palette
Step 1: Prepare Your Wood Panel
Apply about half the jar of white base coat onto the panel. Spread it around using loose strokes, ensuring coverage on the sides. Add small dollops of Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, and Kermit Green acrylic colors to different areas. Blend colors slightly, creating a subtle background.
Tip: Apply thick brush strokes to get rough coverage across all surfaces in one coat.
Step 2: Create the Foliage Base
Mix Kermit Green acrylic color with a bit of Ultramarine Blue to create a darker green. Add this green mixture to some Titanium White Heavy Texture on your palette. Use the palette knife to create leaf-like patterns in the upper left quadrant of your canvas. Apply the mixture in scooping motions to create depth and texture.
Tip: Practice the knife technique on your palette before applying to the canvas.
Step 3: Add Main Floral Elements
Mix a warm, rosy color using Quinacridone Magenta, Hansa Yellow, and Titanium White Heavy Texture. Apply three dollops of this mixture in chosen spots on your canvas. Use the palette knife to create spiral patterns, swirling from the center outwards.
Tip: Aim to complete each spiral in 1-2 strokes for a fluid look.
Step 4: Create Yellow Textured Flowers
Fill a piping bag with Hansa Yellow-tinted Heavy Texture. Attach the 402 ruffle tip to the bag. Pipe lily-like flowers by starting in the center and working your way out. Create at least three of these flowers in different areas of the wood panel
Tip: Keep the piping bag twisted and apply short bursts of pressure for best results.
Step 5: Add Blue Textured Flowers
Mix Ultramarine Blue acrylic color with Titanium White Heavy Texture. Fill a piping bag with this mixture and attach the 353 leaf tip. Create lupine-like flowers by piping in a spiral pattern from top to bottom. Vary the size of these flowers for visual interest.
Tip: Start with smaller flowers at the top and make them larger as you move down for a natural look.
Step 6: Include Magenta Textured Flowers
Mix Quinacridone Magenta acrylic color with Titanium White Heavy Texture. Fill a piping bag with this mixture and attach the 846 closed star tip. Add star-shaped flowers in the empty spaces of your composition. Vary the pressure as you pipe to create different sized flowers.
Tip: Look for areas that need a pop of color and add your magenta flowers there.
Step 7: Blend and Add Details
Use the 1-inch panel brush to blend and soften edges where needed. Use white Base Coat to highlight and create depth. Add final accents of pure Hansa Yellow for extra pop.
Tip: Step back frequently to assess the overall composition and balance of colors.
Step 8: Final Touches
Use the palette knife to add any last-minute texture or color blending. Add drips of watered-down Quinacridone Magenta for a dynamic effect. Consider adding small dots or lines with the piping bags for extra detail. Make any final adjustments to ensure the composition feels balanced and complete.
Tip: Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to make bold choices in your abstract work.
Conclusion:
Congratulations on completing your abstract floral masterpiece! Here are some important care instructions to ensure your artwork lasts:
-
Dry Time: Let your painting dry completely before you handle or display it. To speed up the drying process, use a plug-in fan with constant airflow for several hours. Heavy Texture elements may take up to 48 hours to dry, depending on their thickness.
-
Display: Once dry, you can display your painting as is. Mark a level spot on your wall. Then, hang your painting by screwing it into the wall with two drywall screws, spaced at least 3 inches apart. This will secure the wood panel.
-
Aftercare: If needed, use a damp, lint-free cloth to clean your painting with care. Avoid cleaning solutions, as they can damage the acrylic paint. You can use water instead.
-
Tool Care: Clean your tools with soap and water right after you use them. Proper cleaning will extend the life of your brushes and palette knives.
-
Paint Storage: Store your Acrylic Colors in a cool, dry place. Keep the lids sealed tightly to prevent the contents from drying out.
