Here's why they matter. Bright colors are fun, but a painting made only of bright colors gives your eye nowhere to rest. These four give it somewhere. Titanium white is the workhorse. It lightens any color, builds bright peaks, and makes your highlights. Mars black adds shadow and depth. Burnt sienna and raw iron oxide are warm, quiet browns that calm down a color that's too loud. Put any of them next to a bright color, and the bright color looks brighter.
